The Truth About Tattoo Pain: What It Actually Feels Like

The Truth About Tattoo Pain: What It Actually Feels Like

One of the first questions we hear at Psy is, "How much is this going to hurt?" The honest answer is that yes, getting tattooed involves some discomfort, but it's probably not as bad as you've imagined.

Tattoo pain isn't usually a sharp, unbearable feeling. Most people describe it as a constant scratching sensation or a vibration against the skin. Some areas may feel like a hot sting, while others are surprisingly easy to sit through. The experience also changes throughout the session as your body adjusts.

Where you get tattooed makes a big difference. Areas with more muscle and fat, such as the upper arm, thigh, or calf, are generally easier to tolerate. Places where the skin is thinner or closer to bone, like the ribs, feet, hands, spine, and elbows, tend to be more sensitive.

Your mindset matters too. Arriving well rested, eating a proper meal beforehand, and staying hydrated can make a noticeable difference. On the other hand, coming in tired, hungry, or hungover often makes the experience feel more uncomfortable than it needs to be.

It's also worth remembering that everyone experiences pain differently. Two people getting the exact same tattoo in the same spot may describe completely different experiences. Pain tolerance, stress levels, and even how well you've slept the night before all play a role.

At Psy Tattoos, we make the experience as comfortable as possible. We take our time, check in with you throughout the session, and encourage breaks whenever they're needed. A great tattoo isn't about rushing through the pain. It's about creating something you'll be proud to wear for life.

If fear of pain is the only thing holding you back, don't let it stop you. We've served over three thousand customers and seen hundreds of people get their first tattoo every day and almost all of them leave saying the same thing: "That wasn't nearly as bad as I expected."

Hope this helps! :)
